HUM1015 Section 2 – Mythology
August 29, 2011
Myths can be traced to times prior to the written word. Myths consist of stories that have been traditionally passed down through generations by both word of mouth and, later, in written text. The textbook described myths as having three types: the divine myths, legends, and folktales. Divine myths relate to ancient mystical times where characters such as Zeus and Achilles had supernatural powers. Legends speak of human beings as the principal actors with supernatural beings playing subordinate roles. Legends often relay uplifting stories about Christian saints. Folktales, such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Harry Potter are myths that are well-known. These myths have entertained large audiences. Myths will have a plot, characters, and a setting which classifies them as stories.
The textbook states that “The migration of myths from the ancient Near East to Greece is an event of extraordinary importance in the history of civilization” (Powell 16 ). Western culture and civilization has evolved through both the Greco-Roman influence and mythology. Greco-Roman influence has had a major impact of western architecture and politics while mythology has left its impact on western culture and literature. According to the text, “The study of myth has much in common with the study of literature”(Powell 15). Professor Ruane discussed the importance of mythology on western culture and literature during the lecture. He discussed how myths influenced the literature of Shakespeare and Tennyson.
Mythology is important to study because many of our cultures and human characteristics are associated with mythology. I haven’t studied mythology since grade school; however, I feel that I will gain valuable information and appreciate it at an adult level.
