I am a doctor at a small hospital. I have just learned that there are 4 dying patients who are in need of organ transplants. A healthy individual that same day walks in for his a routine procedure. I am told that the healthy patient organs could be used to potentially save the lives of the 4 dying patients. Should I kill the healthy patient to maximize utility and save the lives of the 4 patients? I decide the rightness and wrongness of each potential scenario and the “good will” that may come as a result of each deed. Are my actions selfish or morally objective? Is the goodwill intrinsic in the act itself? Are my intentions entirely good if it means killing the other patient?
